Thanks for taking an interest in this bug. Or maybe its housecleaning. :) In my attempt to fix/debug this problem, the original files weren't kept, so it can't be reproduced. In general, the problem was in the /var/lib/dpkg available/status files ( I don't remember which) was changed by the package manager, but then was a problem for the package manager on a subsequent run. On that (old) computer, I've disable any dpkg stuff, it is stable and does what it needs. On newer releases, I haven't seen the issue, so have forgotten about it. You can too, if you like.
