same problem on inspiron 9400 and ubuntu 8.10. gnome's volume applet controls master. not LFE.
case buttons control LFE. not master. master and LFE seem to "reach the speakers" independently. sliding up master gives a more treble sound and sliding up LFE gives a more bass sound. if I connect headphones, the only control that has effect on what sounds in the headphones is the master.
