In fact I've booted into a live Kubuntu CD, and copied the /usr/share/X11/xkb 
directory from the liveCD to the corresponding directory in the 
already-installed partition,(I took the precaution to rename the original 
directory to something else before copying) and after a reboot it worked just 
fine.
I didn't have time to pinpoint the culprit file(s), but I hope this information 
will help,

As a sidenote, I had this problem in two Kubuntu amd64 machines, one
dist-upgraded and another installed from scratch. The procedure I
described fixed both machines.
