I ran into this bug when upgrading Debian etch to lenny.  I got around
it by commenting out the text in the "stop" option in the
/etc/init.d/cherokee startup script.  After that things went very
smoothly.  I realize this isn't a "Debian" list but I figured since
Ubuntu is based on Debian and Alvaro gets pinged when this is updated
that I would post here.  Hopefully my comment saves someone a few
minutes.
