Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I'm using IBM ThinkPad T41 and installed Ubuntu 8.04 (upgraded kernel to
2.6.24). As I want to use KDE instead of GNOME (which i have not
installed), and i use Synaptic Package Manager to get the KDE module,
the screen is crashed (on my T41 LCD screen, while still normal at my
external 19-inch clone screen) once I start the download...

The system actually is working fine, only the LCD display on my T41 is
black screen and some meaningless character blinking.
