Ok, the update landed this morning. The good news is, I no longer see the problem occurring where the kernel fails to find it's filesystems on the SATA drive. The bad news; Now I get: BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0! However, still no access to the log files due to filesystems not actually being mounted before this issue occurs. I'll follow the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingIRQProblems to see if they make that problem go away.
