Yes, I'm doing this with a 64bit 8.10 machine. What do you have in your /usr/share/binfmts directory? Perhaps something strange is in there trying to execute your script prior to bash (your script example lacks a "#!..." header as the first line, so it's possible that something other than bash is trying to execute it).
