This bug is for real because I just tried to boot from a Ubuntu 8.10
live x86_64 CD with my system and got the same result. I already had
8.10 x86_64 on my system and after rebooting today 11-19-2008 and my
system did the same thing when booting from a working hard drive with a
working copy of Ubuntu. My system is current with all updates. I was
able to trace the problem to a Sony DVDRW/DVDRAM combo drive that is
brand new. It is an IDE/ATAPI type drive. It is strange because my
system booted 5 or 6 times into Ubuntu 8.10 no problem, but after todays
updates I have to leave that drive disconnected to get my system to
boot. In other words todays updates are badly broken when it comes to
certain combos of hardware.
