i made a workaround for myself with a maze of scripts that means the
firefox profile resides entirely in a tmpfs mount, symlinked from my
~/.mozilla/firefox. It works, and i only lose data if i shutdown or
crash between cron-rsyncs of that profile back to the drive, but it's
pretty unsatisfactory really - only rather more satisfactory than the
default behaviour.

Firefox keeps forcing disk to spin up when browsing because its sqlite storage
calls fsync() for every recorded entry
