Ubuntu uses the OSS driver which is in the kernel. You could try a liveCD/USB for testing purpose and see if the problem disappears. You could also update your BIOS and see if that helps.
I cannot remember that my system froze because of the network chip. Maybe some other hardware in your system is producing this problem.
