FINAL UPDATE-

I think I found the problem- I did a third install, fresh from the live
CD like the other 2, but THIS TIME- knowing there were over 100 updates,
INSTEAD OF immediately opening Firefox, I waited like 5 minutes for the
updates- Updating before using Firefox allows it to complete normally-
upon reset, firefox works still, but other components can be updated
successfully, where before the error persisted.

To avoid this error- wait after the install, and update Ubuntu WITHOUT
OPENING ANYTHING- specifically, firefox.

Now error free. Noticed others getting this error- this is apparently
how you fix it.
