Hmm, that might explain why I'm working all of a sudden. I removed my ~/.gnome2/keystore directory since it wasn't working. You might want to try that. My ~/.gnome2/keyring was symlinks to ~/.ssh. It sounds like you're doing it the other way around, so, in your case, make sure you copy the real keys back to ~/.ssh.
To ensure I'm being 100% clear: I now have ONLY a ~/.ssh, not a ~/.gnome2/keystore.
