I´d also like the solution above, so that firefox just uses gconf and the settings GUI also updates gconf. This could be applied to kde programs under ubuntu (with gnome) as well. Perhaps the user should be informed that this change will also be applied to the other desktop environment if installed. This would be a good solution IMHO :)
