After some investigate it seems that this limit only affects 32 bit
(i386) kernels, the 64 bit (amd64) kernels have no such limit. We would
normally expect and advise the use of 64 bit kernels on machines as big
as these to avoid low-memory pressure and the like. Also changing
something as fundamental as this is well beyond what is possible in an
SRU for Intrepid.
We could consider changing this for Jaunty. Will do some testing there
and see how it pans out.
Overall the recommendation is that these machines should be running a 64
bit kernel.
