Hi, What we usually do in this case is modify the initscript to create the directory in /var/run/ if it does not exist, and then remove anything to do with /var/run from the postinst.
Your patch would fix the issue, but I think it would be better to stick with the usual mechanism. Also, when patching something inside debian/ you shouldn't use a dpatch, and just modify the file directly.
