Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I just upgraded to Intrepid. I switched from the fglrx drivers to the
open source ati drivers. Everything went smoothly and was running
great. The next day my computer was completely unresponsive. I was
able to sluggishly ssh into my computer to find xorg was utilizing 116%
of my cpu (no idea how that's possible). I restarted my computer and
then a few hours later everything freezes up again.

$lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

$lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R300 NE [Radeon
9500 Pro]

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
