Public bug reported:

I have a nVidia Geforce 7600 GS graphics board in a desktop computer. I
prefer to use a display setting of 1024 x 768. In all previous version
of Ubuntu and Kubuntu I have had no problems with setting the display to
these settings on this computer. With Ubuntu 8.10 I can set the display
to 1024 x 768 and when it restarts the display is correct. Using
Kubuntu 8.10 I can get it to take the setting without a problem using
"system settings > Display > Size & Orientation". However on restarting
my computer the display returns to the default. If I go to "system
settings > Display " it immediately returns to 1024 x 768 without any
action by me. It will then be fine until I reboot. Note that I haven't
checked if it will hold on a "logout" "login". I have had the same
problem on three different installs of 9.10 in my desktop computer. I
have also tried both the GDM and the KDM display managers and both have
the same problem. Note that I do not have this problem on my HP
Pavillion dv6000 laptop. Thank you for allowing me to submit this
report. Bob Jones
