Yes the problem still occurred.

I have decided life is too short to continue with this and am now
communicating from a clean install of 8.10 - having changed the
resolution in NVIDIA X server settings - the change is reflected
in Gnome Screen resolution - refresh rate is wrong though 120 in GSR
- 95 in NVIDIA - on restart the resolution reverts to old settings 
despite saving to xserver in NVIDIA - this (saving)  produces
an error message
> Unable to create new X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'.
So far no crashes!
