Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: avahi-daemon

I suddenly got this error "Faild to initialize hal!" when starting up
the desktop environment.

Investigation:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart
*Stopping System Tools Backends system-tools-backends [ ok ]
*Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon: avahi-daemon [fail]
*Stopping Hardware abstraction layer hald [ ok ]
*Stopping system message bus dbus [ ok ]
*Starting system message bus dbus [ ok ]
*Starting Hardware abstraction layer hald [ ok ]
*Starting Avahi Unicast DNS Configuration Daemon: avahi-dnsconfd [fail]
*Starting System Tools Backends system-tools-backends [ ok ]

Then I uninstalled the failed packages and the error message
dissapeared; but are they important, do they will affect DNS?

** Affects: avahi (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
