Public bug reported:
GDM currently requires that one of the following is installed as a
desktop session: "gnome-session | xterm | x-window-manager | x-terminal-
emulator"
It should have "xfce4-session" amongst those too, so that I can install
GDM on a machine with Xfce without having GDM bring in the gnome-session
package, which seems to have a higher priority than the xfce4-session,
which will break logins.
This occurs for the Hardy and Intrepid GDM packages, and possibly
earlier versions as well.
