Thanks Peter, but when there is no text visible in the menus, you don't know where to go to change the font!
I have solved the problem by removing Nvidia96 via Synaptic Package Manager (NVidia as the problem was suggested elsewhere) . When I restarted my computer a message box popped up advising that my graphics were low resolution (haven't got the exact wording) and offered options including restoring default setting.
