This is on Ubuntu 8.04:
On my work computer, the system often (on at least 50% of attempts) does not
finish booting because it does not find the root filesystem.
Switching to console reveals part of a backtrace in the USB subsystem, followed
by the announcement, that IRQ #18got disabled.
According to lspci, both the USB and SATA controllers are on IRQ #18, so that
already explains why the root fs is not found.
I have had this problem for several months. Until a couple of weeks ago,
I could work around it by supplying the "irqpoll" boot option, but now
when I add it the system immediately reboots as soon as the boot process
starts.
The only USB devices attached are a USB keyboard and mouse.
I usually have to reboot about two or more times before the root fs is
found.
I will try to catch more of the actual error messages/backtrace soon.
