Almost same thing here, however with Thunderbird 2.0.18 (20081125).
I am running Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 with Linux 2.6.27-7-generic.

Interestingly, it worked perfectly before the most recent update from
the kubuntu repositories.

First things I noticed: 'detach all' or 'delete all' or 'save all' seems
to be disabled in the menu appearing with right-click. So I had to
delete five files indidividually, using detach. After the first one is
detached, it seems that the first attachment can't be deleted anymore.
In the fact, the next item becomes true:

Next: messages seem not to disappear, i.e.they don't get marked 'deleted'.
I start deleting the files manually, each item by hand (again, delete all won't
work).

I restart Tbird, hoping that might help, rereading the maildirectory. To
my astonishment, the same huge email somebody sent me, appears twice
now!!! this is really a problem now!

I haven't managed yet to get rid of these attachments as of now - please
fix this, thunderbird is a great application and has been absent for a
really long time of such nuisances! :)
