Hi!
i've just upgraded my ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 and when it has finished ,now there s 
no sound, or card sound device detected too.
when i click on volume control from panel it says:

Tried everything on the forums and elsewhere to solve this

also tried 
options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=3 at the end of my  /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
also audio is in my groups as far as I can tell.  I did get an access denied 
message to a command I ran at the terminal for my soundcard but cannot remember 
which one.
I have other problems as well since upgrading and there is some commonality 
although it maybe coincidence.  I have no network manager applet and no power 
manager applet and the sound applet is there but gives me the gstreamer 
message.  All the problems I have are all programs that sit on the gnome panel. 
 

Can you please help me sort this out since the sound has worked w/o problem in 
every version of ubuntu until now.
