Please run vlc in verbose mode (vlc -v2) in a maximized terminal, reproduce, 
copy->paste the output into a text file and attach to this report. 

How did you install the system? Gnome first and then KDE, or vice versa?
Any other window managers installed? Is vlc only failing in kde? Have
you tried to re-install vlc?
