Jan: the rationale for Ubuntu no longer shipping with CUPS-PDF is that GTK2 and QT both recently acquired native support for printing to a PDF file. This is accomplished via the Print dialog's "Save to file..." option in all GNOME and KDE applications and doesn't require CUPS anymore.
