Public bug reported:
I have a XUBUNTU 8.10 with VNC4. Goal to run it headless. I access XUBUNTU from an XP/SP3 system running VNCVIEWER4. It took a couple of hours to get VNC up and running but most things seem to work. But, if I run APPLICATIONS>SYSTEM>SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER or APPLICATIONS>SYSTEM>LANGUAGE SUPPORT the database builder starts and the progress bar seems to stop about 50% of the way thru the process. I only seem to be able to stop it by running TOP, getting the PID, and sudo kill -TERM. Further testing shows any of the package/update programs seems to fail the same way. If I use the console, both packages operate without problem. That seems to be, any program that requires root privileges fails, others are just fine. Very weird for a communications program. Installation of software followed the "grumpmole" description at ... http://grumpymole.blogspot.com/2006/12/xubuntu-remote-desktop-with-vnc4server.html but noted that the -fp font string for "service Xvnc" was wrong for Xubuntu 8.10. If you can't update the box, you can't really run headless. ...S ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- VNC 4 session running update-manager freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303420 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
