Are you using compiz ("desktop effects")? I am not able to reproduce on
xserver-xorg-video-ati, using this line:
while sleep 5; do pic=$(xscreensaver-getimage-file --name /media/DATA/photos
2>/dev/null); gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
--type string $pic ; done
