Hi sianj. What you want to do is open a terminal by going to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal, then type in "sudo dpkg --configure -a" without the quotes. You will prompted for your password, so after you enter it and hit enter, it should fix everything for you. Let me know if this makes sense and updates work afterwards!
