Public bug reported:
I tried to purge old kernel packages today, after I booted the new
2.6.24-22 package.
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-19 failed to uninstall due to missing
/boot/System.map-2.6.24-19-generic file.
What I did:
- Mark in synaptic all old kernel packages previously installed: this included
backport and ubuntu -19 modules, and the complete -21 set (image, headers, lrm,
lum, lbm)
- apply the instruction to remove, and reboot
- after the boot, notice that some of the packages still need purging, so mark
in synaptic for complete removal and apply
What I expected:
- All packages to be successfully purged.
What happened
- The post-removal returned a fatal error when trying to access non-existant
files (which is strange, since I'm trying to remove the package, missing files
should be ok, right?)
What I tried then
- sudo touch /boot/System.map-2.6.24-19-generic
No joy, I got the following error (full output attached):
WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic: No such file
or directory
FATAL: Could not open /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/modules.dep.temp for
writing: No such file or directory
Not having these files is expected, since the package has been removed.
I had to re-install the lbm package, and mark it for purging (when it's
installed, as opposed to what I did in the first time). Then it worked.
PS: On a side note, I didn't manually remove the file, and don't know
why it was missing.
