On a Thinkpad after some recent update the volume down button gets
interpreted as XF86AudioStop. It appears to be the same bug discussed
in the forum above, and also

issues-td19151047.html (+some likely dupes in launchpad)
Adding the following in xorg.conf fixed the problem for me:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
