I had the same error message.  I DID interrupt the installation as my
wireless connection had dropped just as I passed the command to the
shell.  I ran the command as you suggested to the gentleman above; the
output is as follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo sh -x 
/var/lib/dpkg/info/fast-user-switch-applet.postrm
[sudo] password for inductance: 
+ set -e
+ [  = remove ]
+ which update-gconf-defaults
+ update-gconf-defaults
+ [  = purge ]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ 

Not too sure what I'm doing, but I hope that I've helped.
