In my case it turns out to be the broadcom binary blob for the wifi dell
1505 a/b/g/n card.  On hardy it suspends and resumes ok.  On intrepid, I
have to remove both "wl" and "ieee80211_crypt" before hibernation and
add them back after resume.  Unfortunately this results in the wifi
hardware grabbing the "ssb" driver during the resume.  The only fix on
intrepid seems to be rmmod and modprobe, which disrupts the network.
I'm surprised it works ok on hardy but not intrepid.  Oh well, that's
the nature of binary's.

Anyway, hibernate is now working again.
