I have the same problem. I have a toshiba A100 with Intel945 chipset. When I connect the external monitor, it works fine, but after some random time, it turns to black or sometimes other colors and I can not make it work again unless I completely restart the computer (even restarting the X does not help). I have also noticed time to time jitters on the monitor picture, it is like for a moment the video signal goes on and off.
