Hi Ian
Thanks for the follow up.

It looks as if basic functionality of sound (of the 'Front' sound
channel) does work with 8.10 as supplied on the Ubuntu live Cd.
However, I could not get the sound recording to work, there was no
recording level indication and when the recording Stop was used, the
window froze. Maybe this is something to do with capture not being set
correctly or that something cannot be recognised. (?)

Details:
I removed the PCI soundcard which is in normal use for 8.04 everyday
and have run machine with onboard sound set as auto (that is not
disabled) and have used the live CD ubuntu 8.10:

The sound sockets ('front' sound and 'rear' sound channel sockets) are
physically on the rear panel of the PC: the Front channel works ok.
The rear channel does not - no sound

And also there is a single socket ('Front' sound channel) on the front
of the PC: this works ok

There is a microphone socket on the rear panel and also on the front
panel of the PC - I have not tested these, (sorry).

note:
Using 8.10 on this novatech PC of about 7 months old, I cannot get
screen resolution other than 800x600 so I am reluctant to actually
install it into this particular machine yet. I intend to install it
here in a few weeks time, and then I can investigate for better screen
resolution, and importantly, get all the updates for 8.10, which might
possibly assist with sound and maybe also screen resolution.

aside note:
I find the minimal xorg.conf file and the recent xorg facilities to
be incredibly non informative and are the cause of many support issues
I come across. If you have any influence in xorg team, give them my
appreciation and also ask for better user visibility of configuration
when problems occur?
