Thanks for the suggestion.
I have installed openoffice.org-style-crystal, and it now works correctly 
(although with very big fonts that are not the fonts I have configured in KDE 
and that all the applications on my system use).

I still think this is a bug though, because openoffice should not rely
on a style that the user has no way of knowing to run correctly (it
should not try to use the nonexistant crystal style when the gtk style
is correctly installed).
