1) [Reply to bodiddly] I am running kernel 2.6.27-9-generic as I am experiencing the problem. I checked for updates and 2.6.27-10 was not listed as an update so I can not verify if upgrading to that kernel would fix the problem. I will report if a kernel upgrade fixes it the next time I can get a newer kernel through the update manager. 2) Running the command: sudo rmmod ath_pci && sudo modprobe ath_pci does seem to fix the problem temporarily but it is not much easier than just connecting again through the network manager!
