In #14310 the conclusion seems to be that enabling autohinting by default is not a good idea. So adding a configuration option might be a good solution.
I think the best way to do it locally is adding an `Enable auto-hinting' checkbox to gnome-font-properties, which modifies ~/.fonts.conf.
