Jackie, The problem with open office is not the same driver problem reported here. OOO2.4 and OOO3.0 call a specific font which is sometimes missing in the system. I fixed the problem in Ubuntu by going to the system-preferences-appearance-fonts and changing the fonts there. It worked after restarting OOO.
