Public bug reported:

With default system font settings i.e. full hinting and sub-pixel
highlighting, using QT4 apps like Opera, by default, there a large
inconsitancies between the font rendering. Largley, they are rendered
without hinting and look plain ugly.

"Hinting/antialiasing settings set in user preferences are ignored and
are set based upon symlinks located at /etc/fonts/conf.d (i.e. defaulted
at medium font hinting, no subpixel hinting)."

I've noticed this since Gutsy and is still in effect in Intrepid.
Thankfully, the following post describes how to fix it -- by changing
some symlinks:

But this is a bug that should be fixed in future releases.
