I am experiencing the same problem, except for screen blinking, since I
installed Kubuntu 8.10 on a Compaq Presario 773EL notebook: the system hangs
about 50% of the times during KDE startup, right after login.
I cannot switch to any virtual terminal/console by hitting ctrl+alt+F#, nor
kill the session with ctrl+alt+backspace. Magic keys like [r sist]+b do not
work either, and I have to switch power off.
