Hi Bryce, Sorry for my late reply. The problem still persists. But changing desktop using the Kasbar (clicking on an app that's on another desktop) refreshes the system and solves the issue. I keep "apt-get upgrade"-ing the system rather regularly, though I didn't do a dist-upgrade for a while now.
Updating to the new Kubuntu is not yet in my plans since I'm still hesitant whether to move to kde 4.1 so early (I have it as well installed in the system). I attach the files you comment upon.
