here the requested info:

Two computers running Ubuntu Intrepid, and both updated before this test. Both 
wired to the network.
athlon: a desktop with screen resolution 1152x864
aa1: a netbook with screen resolution 1024x600, @ 10.0.0.66

ssh connections go from athlon to aa1.

attached (all from athlon)
- terminal output of the connections to aa1
- /etc/xorg.conf
- /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- lspci -nnvv

same result as before: 
ssh without '-X': xrandr --> Can't open display 
ssh -X : xrandr --> output of local machine, not from the one I am ssh'ed into
