I checked Xorg.0.log before and after triggering this problem and I see no errors logged. (I verified I was checking the right log file by triggering and X client rejection with wrong user, and saw that logged to Xorg.0.log.)
/etc/X11/xorg.conf is pretty much standard. I could try to find an Ubuntu box with another graphics driver to verify this is not an NVIDIA specific issue.
