I switched (full re-installation rather then upgrade) to 8.10 and the
autoconf Xorg works fine for the X server, but still not for text
console. I resolve the issue by setting vga option in kernel. Therefore
it's not a Xorg problem.
My grub entry for ubuntu is:
title Ubuntu
root (hd0,5)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 vga=0x318
initrd (hd0,0)/initrd.img
(I'm using grub from Fedora 10).
BTW. The seem issue affects Fedora, I also needed to add vga option.
I also raised some problem with Xorg setting in bug 243952.
