Public bug reported:

This is a very strange bug. After the upgrade from Hardy (where sound
worked fine) to Intrepid sound stopped working. I tried all of the tips
in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems but nothing worked. I
downloaded the latest alsa drivers (1.0.18a) and compiled and installed
them. Now I can get a very quiet "squeal" out of the speakers for the PC
Beep, but otherwise no sound. I have played around with alsamixer (run
as alsamixer and "alsamixer -Dhw") and everything is set to 100%, no
muting. I have tried it with all of the switches on and off in all
combinations but nothing seems to work. One time it did work after I was
moving the sliders for volume up and down in the Gtk volume control
panel, but as soon as I rebooted it went back to not working. I'm going
to try to boot from the install CD just to rule out some configuration
issue, but otherwise I'm not sure what else to do. Output from alsa-
info.sh is here:

Thanks.
