I am no longer sure that this is a driver problem. The problem I originally experienced happened immediately after upgrading to 8.04. It was 100% repeatable at the time and changing the driver as described above fixed it at the time.
Recently, it seems this printer has started to degrade such that the problem now occurs intermittently and no longer is associated to the driver choice but possibly with the size of the print job.
