** Description changed: So in the process of trying to establish a permanent mac address for my laptop for router-verification, I modified my /etc/network/intefaces to: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp pre-up ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:08:69:12:34:56 this promptly caused the network manager icon to disappear after reboot but my mac address was changed and I could get wired internet. I had this problem before and was able to change the mac address AND get the icon, but I don't remember how. I believe it was the addition of the inet dhcp bit or something to that effect but I couldn't get it this installation. I'm probably just being a noob with this and its something obvious that I'm doing wrong. UPDATE: When I tried getting connected to a wifi network the icon reappeared and is currently still visible (and wired internet works still). This leads me to assume that this is definitely a bug in Ubuntu - 8.10. + 8.10. However, it says eth0 - Unmanaged.
