Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-calc

Ubuntu 8.10
openoffice.org-calc 1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1
x86-64 version

The optization solver ("Solver" from the Tools menu) seems to be
severely broken.

The attached spreadsheet demonstrates this: I try to find the x that
maximizes the expression -x with the constraint -x<=0, then the obvious
solution is x = 0, but the solver fails finding a solution.

To reproduce:
1. Open the attached spreadsheet with OpenOffice Calc.
2. Open 'Solver' from the Tools menu.
3. Press 'Load' to load the problem definition I used.
4. Press 'Options' and unselect 'Assume linear system'
5. Press 'Solve'

I'd assume it to find the solution x = $A$1 = 0, but instead the
operation times out; on termination it is revealed that $A$1 ends up in
a negative value, which violates the constraint -x<=0. Pressing Solve
again results in an even smaller value, which violates the constraint
'even more'; this indicates that the solver searches in the wrong
direction.

I suppose this is an upstream bug, but I don't know whether it should be
reported to OpenOffice.org or to go-oo.
