Hi John,
It took some puzzling but I made it work. I kept thinking the problem 
with starting up offline had to do with the gmail/imap add-on.

1. Removed imap/gmail,  not solution.
2. Tried offline.startup_state using 1,2,3,4 and 0: no avail. Kept it on 0.
3. Removed all references to gmail from prefs.js by hand, when Thun was 
off.: still Thun started up offline.
4. Lastly I used the Thunderplunger add-on to remove any traces of the 
imap gmail account: That worked!
Now Thunderbird starts up online again, as I wnat it to do.

It seems that this problem has nothing to do with Ubuntu, but all with 
the gmail/imap addon that probably was updated a short while ago, after 
I installed it initially.

As far as I am concerned: Status: Done => Completed
